New opinion paper on how to redifine biomaterial biocompatibility and the challenges for artificial intelligence and text mining

Oct 18, 2023

“Redefining biomaterial biocompatibility: challenges for artificial intelligence and text mining” is a new article, published in Trends on Biotechnology by Dr. Miguel Mateu-Sanz, PhD student Carla V. Fuenteslópez, Dr. Juan Uribe-Gomez, Prof. Håvard Jostein Haugen, Prof. Abhay Pandit, Prof. Maria-Pau Ginebra, Dr. Osnat Hakimi, Dr. Martin Krallinger and Dr. Athina Samara, all of them members of the BIOMATDB Project, discussing the need for a new definition of biocompatibility and the challenges in developing one that allows for data mining approaches.

Members of the BBT group, in collaboration with members from the Universities of Oxford (UK), Galway (UK) and Oslo (Norway), aMoon Ventures (Iran) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain), have recently published the paper “Redefining biomaterial biocompatibility: challenges for artificial intelligence and text mining” in Trends on Biotechnology.

The article is the result of the findings achieved with BIOMATDB, an Horizon Europe funded project which aims to create a biomaterials database supported by data analysis and visualisation tools extended with a marketplace with digital advisors.

Biomaterials present a widespread and growing medical applications, which expands the volumes of data and difficult their structuring and interpretation. Biocompatibility is essential in biomaterials development, for that, establishing an actualized and standardized biocompatibility definition is essential to allow data extraction and profile safety effectiveness.

The paper explains the need of a new biocompatibility definition, showcasing the challenges to produce one, identifying the key elements and proposing an integrated biocompatibility definition that allow to identify specific requirements for data mining.
