Technology Services

The Technology Transfer section of the BBT has a technological nature and it is mainly focused to University-Industry Technology Transfer. The activity of this section is based on the know-how of the different research lines that constitute the group.

From our headquarters in Barcelona, our activity is focused on the R&D design, management, organization and execution of projects for (local, national and international) companies and on the accomplishment of studies and specific services of analysis and/or experimental characterization.

Bone like cells CPC
  • Microscopy and surface analysis 
    Scanning electron microscopy and Field-emission scanning electron microsc. Transmission electron microsc. (TEM). Optical interferometry. Atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fluorescence microscopy. Optical microscopy and image analysis. Surface profilometry. Contact angle. Zeta Potential. 
  • Electrochem. characterization
    Ion release tests according to UNE-EN ISO 10993-15. Corrosion testing according to UNE-EN ISO 10993-15, ASTM G5, ASTM G61 and ASTM F-2129, among others.

  • Mechanical characterization
    Static and dynamic, uniaxial and biaxial Mechanical tests, compression, tensile, bending, and rotation in dry and liquid environment. Creep testing, Pull-out tests on histological samples, injectability testing. Hardness testing and determination of hardness profilesin materials and coatings . Scratch tests of coatings. Coatings’ and materials’ wear resistance testing by pin-on-disk wear. Strain measurements..

  • Chemical and structural materials characterization 
    X-ray diffraction (XRD). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Surface chemical analysis by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Raman spectroscopy. Atomic emission spectrometry (AES). IR-FTIR spectroscopy. Materials’ degradation studies. Determination of kinetic drug delivery systems. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Particles density by gas pycnometry. Determination of the specific surface area and distribution of the micro, meso and macro porosity.

  • Metallographic analysis and quantification 
    Diamond disc for cutting precision. Metal samples grinding and polishing. Metallographic Etchings.

  • Heat and surface treatments
    Heat and surface treatments until 1550ºC. Sintering heat treatments. Heat treatments in controlled atmosphere (N2, Ar, CO2, He). Accelerated corrosion treatments.Low temperature plasma surface treatments: Coatings, Activation and Functionalization. Freeze drying. Autoclave sterilization.

  • Biological Characterization
    Direct and indirect cytotoxicity according to UNE-EN ISO 10993. Adhesion, cell proliferation & cell differentiation on smooth, rough, porous materials and on different geometries and sizes. Bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation tests on smooth, rough, porous materials and on different geometries and sizes. Protein surface adsorption and immobilization testing. Gene and protein expression. "Quantitative Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction" (RT-qPCR). Quartz microbalance.

  • In-vivo characterization
    Experimental design, management and execution of in vivo studies in different animal models (mouse, rabbit, pig, dog and sheep) in order to evaluate tissue response to biomaterials.

  • Laboratory for Histological characterization
    Fixation, dehydration, paraffin-embedded, grinding and polishing of histological samples. Colorimetric staining and immunohistochemical tissue preparation for histological evaluation. Graphite coatings samples for SEM evaluation. Histomorphometric analysis by SEM, optical and fluorescence microscopy. Tissue metal ions determination.
