Expoquimia Award 2014 for the Biomaterials , Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Research Group and its research on antimicrobial materials

A new antimicrobial material for dental implants, designed by Prof.. Maria Pau Ginebra and Prof. Xavier Gil, Expoquimia R&D Award in 2014 , in the framework of the international Expoquimia exhibition in Barcelona.

The project "Antimicrobial Biomaterials for bone substitution and regeneration" has been the winner of the 4th edition of the Expoquimia R&D Awards, thanks to the creation of an innovative antimicrobial biomaterial that prevents infections in dental implants.

With this new material, Prof. Ginebra and Prof. Gil want to improve resistance to bacteria infection when the bone binds with the prosthesis, making a safer biological seal between the two parts. This has been achieved through the development of bone regeneration materials that release a series of antibacterial chemical principles locally.

The prize for the Research Group in Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering is endowed with 5.000 euros, which will go entirely to strengthen and increase the research carried out by UPC researchers.

The R&D Awards were divided in two categories: chemistry and biotechnology and are intended to encourage research in these two areas, essential motor for the evolution and development of science and technology.

IPR19, a drug in preclinical phase against schizophrenia, presented by Teresa Tarragó Ernest Giralt of the company Iproteos (PCB) has won the award in the category of Biotechnology.
