Daniel Rodríguez-Rius receives funding to bring to market a porous titanium prosthesis for foot osteotomy surgeries

The Generalitat de Catalunya, through its call "Producte", has granted funding to BBT researchers, with Dr. Daniel Rodríguez-Rius as PI, to carry out their project "Porous titanium prosthesis with dual osteoinductive and antibacterial surface treatment for foot osteotomy surgeries".

Dr. Daniel Rodríguez-Rius has received funding from Generalitat de Catalunya, through its Producte AGAUR call, to carry out his project "Porous titanium prosthesis with dual osteoinductive and antibacterial surface treatment for foot osteotomy surgeries".

The project seeks to respond to one of the biggest challenges in the field of medical devices, which is the emergence of bacterial infections. This problem involves a great cost to the healthcare in our country, distress in the patients who suffer from it and, in some cases, even death.

Recently, the development of cost-effective processes for the manufacture of porous titanium (Ti) structures through additive manufacturing allows the stiffness of prostheses to be adjusted. The dual functionalization of porous Ti implants proposed in this project introduces the bioregenerative side and antibacterial capabilities, both at surface and internal level, taking advantage of their interconnected porous structure, in order to fight bacterial infections, even those resistant to antibiotics .
