Marc Iglesias Fernández (Barcelona, 1994) holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In 2026, he obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at UPC within the Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering (BBT-UPC) research group, with the doctoral thesis “Fundamentals of Calcium-Phosphate Nanotopographies as Antibacterial Surfaces.”
His research focuses on the development of nanostructured surfaces with intrinsic antibacterial properties, without the need for chemical additives, with the aim of preventing implant-associated infections and improving the performance of biomaterials used in bone grafts. His work integrates materials science, microbiology, and bioinformatics, together with advanced imaging techniques, including experiments performed at the ALBA Synchrotron using cryo soft X-ray tomography.
He has participated in several international conferences and is the author of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. He also maintains research collaborations with the School of Pharmacy from Queen’s University Belfast, focusing on the bioinformatic analysis of bacterial responses to antimicrobial surfaces. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Doctoral Thesis Prize Fellowship from the College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia, supported by the Caja de Ingenieros Foundation.
