Researcher Profile FUTUR.

Short Bio

Giulia Fornabaio is an Italian-born researcher with a Bachelor degree in Biotechnology (2011) and a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (2013), both completed at the Università di Bologna, the oldest University of Western world. In July 2021, she also graduated at an additional Master's degree in Scientific Communication and Outreach, organized by the University of Vic.

Before starting her PhD at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in 2018, she worked for several years in different biomedical laboratories spread all over Europe. Indeed, before moving to Barcelona, she worked as a Research Engineer in Cellular and Molecular Biology laboratories in Magdeburg, Toulouse and Paris.

In April 2023, she obtained her PhD with an international mention and Cum Laude qualification for her doctoral thesis entitled “Biomechanics of the progression of colorectal carcinomas”. Her project, at the interface between physics, tissue biology and bioengineering, was about the study of a peculiar typology of collective metastasis, associated with a bad prognosis for patients.

She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the project “Biomimetic hydrogels delivering oxidative stress from cold plasmas to boost tissue regeneration” (PlasmaBOOST), within the Plasmas for Biomedical Applications research line, led by Dr. Cristina Canal at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
