Short Bio

Andrea Llaves earned her bachelor's degree in Biotechnology in 2018 and a master's degree in Translational Medicine in 2019, both from Universitat de Barcelona.

In 2025, she obtained her PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona, carried out at the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona (IIBB-CSIC), receiving a cum laude distinction. During this period, she completed a research stay at the Tissue Engineering and Organ Regeneration group at the University of Geneva. Her thesis, titled “Polyethylene glycol 35 as a therapeutic tool in pancreatic ischemia-reperfusion injury: preservation of the endothelial integrity and function”, focused on investigating the role of the vascular endothelium -specifically the endothelial glycocalyx- in pancreatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. Additionally, her research evaluated the protective potential of the polymer PEG35 as a therapeutic tool for managing secondary complications associated with pancreas transplantation.

Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher for the Bioflex project within the Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Research Group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Her research, supervised by Dra. Montserrat Español, focuses on the study of calcium phosphates as biomaterials for bone regeneration.
