Cristina Canal receives the Plasma Medicine Award, the highest distinction in plasma medicine

BBT researcher and leader of the PlasmaMed LAB, Cristina Canal, has been awarded the Plasma Medicine Award (PMA). This award is the most important recognition granted by the International Society for Plasma Medicine (ISPM), to honor a lifetime career and contributions to this scientific field.

The ISPM board presents this award every two years during its international conference. In this edition, the award has been presented to Cristina Canal and French researcher Eric Robert. The award ceremony took place during the 11th International Conference on Plasma Medicine (ICPM11) & 10th International Workshop on Plasmas for Cancer Treatment (IWPCT10), held from May 31st to June 5th in Gifu (Japan).

This is not the first time the international society has recognized the work of the UPC researcher. In 2018, Canal already received the Early Career Award in Plasma Medicine (ECAPM), the distinction for young scientists with an outstanding trajectory. With this new award, her career is validated on a global scale, making her, moreover, the first person to receive both awards.

Plasma medicine is a field that uses cold plasma (an ionized gas) for medical applications, such as tissue regeneration or the development of new therapies against cancer. Dr. Canal is one of the leading figures, having led two ERC projects (APACHE and TRANSFORMER) and a COST Action (PlasTHER), among many other projects in this field of research.
